Masking Pain Versus Treating The Cause

Some aching here, a little twinge of pain there, we’ve all experienced aches and pains after exercise, a long week of work, or as the result of our bodies aging. What is your first reaction to these pains? Are you treating it or masking pain? According to WebMD and the American Gastroenterological Association, more than 30,000 Americans use NSAIDs (non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs) each day, to treat minor to moderate pain.

Americans use NSAIDs for everything from headaches, strains and sprains, to arthritis pain and unrealized injuries and bone and joint conditions. NSAID use is so widespread because many of these drugs are often available over-the-counter, and also limit fevers, swelling, and blood clotting, in addition to relieving pain.

NSAIDs are useful but can also have negative side effects, especially taken in higher dosages or long-term. Some negative effects can include the development of ulcers, high blood pressure or endocrine issues. NSAIDs are best used for short-term pain relief.

If you find yourself with a nagging pain in a joint, or in your neck, or back, a pain that won’t seem to go away, and you’re not sure where it came from, you should be seen by a physiatrist or an orthopedic surgeon, to diagnose and treat the condition. The diagnosis and subsequent treatment of any condition you may have is a solution for you. Masking the aches and sprains, nagging pains and swelling, with the use of NSAIDs, is not a long-term solution and may result in your condition getting worse.
