What Is Thoracic Outlet Syndrome?

Many types of upper or mid back pain are caused by poor posture. Sitting or slumping for long periods of time can have a serious impact on or mid-spine, which can cause pain to radiate throughout our back, neck, head, and upper extremities. This condition is known as thoracic outlet syndrome.

Your thoracic outlet is the space between your collarbone and first rib. Thoracic outlet syndrome is caused by compression of the nerves or blood vessels that run through this space. A variety of daily activities can irritate and put pressure on these nerves, resulting in pain and nerve dysfunction.

Treatment with Physical Therapy

Physical therapy exercises will take pressure off of your nerves and vessels over a period of time. Strengthening and stretching your shoulder muscles will open the thoracic cavity, relieving pressure. This will also improve your posture, preventing Thoracic Outlet Syndrome from reoccurring.
